Details:
First there were two...
Chappy originally began as a project between brothers Michael and Robert Wagner in the summer of 2002. Michael had moved to New Orleans earlier that year, giving up a lucrative life as an engineer for what would hopefully be a more fufilling life as a musician. Robert had already lived in New Orleans for 10 years, and was an accomplished and respected jazz saxophonist, composer and clarinet player for the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars.
For one week, the brothers set out to compose one song a day for guitar and saxophone. Michael was an accomplished finger-picker, brought up in the style of Mississippi John Hurt, so the original formula was to have Michael provide bass lines and melodic lines on the guitar, with Robert doubling melodic themes saxophone. Each day they picked a different topic. In that first week, the brothers wrote 6 of the 11 tracks that would end up on the first Chappy album.

And then there were 3...
After writing songs for guitar and saxophone, the Wagner brothers decided to add percussion to the mix. They called their friend David Sobel, drummer for the New Orleans Klezmer Allstars. At this time, the group also began working on the vocal harmonies that would become a hallmark of their sound.

And then there was Chappy!
Chappy played their first gig in February of 2003 at the Circle Bar in New Orleans. After playing a few gigs, they decided to add a bass to the mix to fill out the sound even more, and add a fourth vocal for fun. They called in local songwriter Greg Schatz (aka Schatzy), and Chappy (in the form that''s on this album) was born.

How does Chappy feel?
The songs on this album cover a gamut of emotions: despair, indifference, resignation, sadness, hopelessness, cynicism and...uh...laundry. The songs are not about happy things, but they are not necessarily sad sounding songs.

Chappy, the Prophet?
The first song on the album, "Floodwaters", was written back in 2002. The song is about a catastrophic flood that sweeps everything away. Whenever we played this song at gigs, we''d joke about how when the big one came, the song would be a hit. Well...the big one came and her name was Katrina. Now that hurricane Katrina has swamped NewOrleans we, as a band, have been living out parts of the song in eerie detail. Time to go on tour, we guess.
