Details:
Jonathan Snow Carpenter was born and raised in the small town of Hamburg, Arkansas, where the biggest business in town was his family’s furniture store. Most of Jonathan’s family and extended family was employed at this furniture store and most also attended the same church together. Jonathan was taught the importance of attending church at a very early age and at nearly seven years old accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. During his high school years while his friends most often wound up playing video games, he would often come home and spend several hours writing music and playing the piano or the guitar.

After graduating from high school, Jonathan began pursuing a Vocal Music degree at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Jonathan quickly became accustomed to singing for eight hours or more every day as he worked toward this degree. He spent very long days learning the difference between a German and a French Augmented-Sixth chord, but also spending time getting to know Kimberly Schmeckenbecher. After becoming best friends and becoming inseparable, Jonathan and Kimberly would marry in June of 2000, beginning a wonderfully blessed and Christ-centered marriage. During his fourth and final year at Henderson State, Jonathan began to realize that in spite of his operatic abilities (being offered a Young Artist Apprenticeship at the Wildwood Performing Arts Festival), he really did not enjoy opera enough to continue pursuing it as a career. He had, however, also spent time returning to the very thing that had fueled his passion for music many years earlier… composition. Jonathan had his first composition lesson in late November of his senior year and actually wrote enough music by March to have a strong enough portfolio of work to submit to and be accepted into the graduate program with a full assistantship for a Master of Music in Composition degree at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Jonathan’s first duties at Baylor included teaching two advanced theory courses every Friday while the normal instructor graded papers in his office. This was one of the most terrifying experiences of his life because he hated speaking in front of people. Much to his surprise, however, he discovered that teaching and helping his students learn became another one of his passions. Through the years at Baylor, Jonathan grew by leaps and bounds as a composer, a singer, a teacher, and most importantly, as a musician. After graduating from Baylor, he was immediately hired as a full-time lecturer, teaching courses in Musicianship and Electronic Music. Jonathan then turned his attention to continuing his education and accepted a full assistantship for working toward his Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado.

Things did not work out as well as expected from the moment that he and Kimberly moved to Colorado and it was not long before Jonathan began realizing that God was trying to get his attention for some reason. After many weeks spent in diligent prayer, Jonathan decided that the Lord was calling him into music ministry. On the night before the spring semester was to begin, Jonathan made a phone call to let his professors know that he would no longer be attending school, despite the fact that he had no prospects for a job in ministry or otherwise and had no clear indication as to what would happen next. Many months went by as Jonathan pursued a ministry position, began writing songs once again, and was taught a great deal of patience through suffering emotionally and financially.

Jonathan has returned to his hometown area in Southeast Arkansas and has been a Minister of Music in a small Southern Baptist church for nearly two years. He has really learned that he is most interested in being a minister who happens to use music most of the time, but will do whatever it takes to minister to a person or group of people. Jonathan has now become a preacher, teacher, mentor, friend, prayer partner, and has learned the importance of hospital and home visits… yet, music still seems to be the tool that God uses through Jonathan to most often express His message.

Jonathan no longer pretends to know the plans God has in store for him, but is completely willing to go wherever he can best be used for ministry. He has rediscovered his love for singing, songwriting, arranging, reading, and writing. Kimberly (along with baby boy, Micah) has been the ever-faithful companion, friend, and support for Jonathan and continues to express her desire for the family to consistently live wholly and complete in God’s will, knowing that He will always provide what is necessary for the furthering of His Kingdom.
