From the opening trak in STRAIGHT UP-- "The Funk"-- to "Pro" (the last), listener''s ears are blessed with true, musical expression-- somethin'' wildly scarce in the commercialized music world. With Clever, lyrical composition of both words and melodies, Avi boasts his ability to captivate any average person who enjoiz "dope" music. Although he''s not one to criticize gangsta rap or hardcore hustla club music, he does give the hip hop community somethin'' just as raw, but with an alternate, jazzy, intellectual twist.
ALL but Three trax on this album were produced from scratch by Avi himself. Using nothing more than a keyboard to create simple jazz/funk riffs and Drum patterns that "flip" as he would say, AVI gives the public his roots in the form of music. The history of hip hop is in his blood-- Nasty, but simple, rugged drum patterns from africa (Black side)-- intellectually complex musical depth (Creole side)-- and a latin aura of 3/4 time mixed in with plenty of minor 7th chords (dominican side). And in the midst of all these loudmouth one-hit-wonder emcees that flood the radio and media with nonsense, Avi keeps his composure and produces classic, yet cunning, Hip Hop
