Details:
Chris Lyons is a twenty year old pianist from Edinburgh. Classically-trained, as well as being one of his country''s top-rated performing jazz pianists, on his new album Chris fuses these influences into a unique and experimental but also highly accessible and artful style of music. The influence of his other role as a composer for film and ballet can be seen in the cinematic sweep of his music. His classical training also means that he brings a great deal more technical acumen to jazz piano execution than most pianists. As well as the influences of classical and jazz, there are shades of rock, minimalism and club music.
The Ill-Tempered Klavier takes its title from Bach''s Well Tempered Klavier and is an album of entirely original and groundbreaking contemporary music. Often utilising strange time changes, unusual harmonies, dense counterpoint and dynamic shifts, the music is more structured than most jazz but is more improvisational than most classical music. The manner in which the format of the jazz piano trio is reimagined and reconfigured on this record will be of interest to all fans of improvised and contemporary music. From the Bartok gone Heavy Metal of ''Pterodactylic Hexameters'' to the Chabrier meets Bill Evans meets Sigur Ros of ''Free Market Orgonomics'' to the taxing mathematical montunos gone Zeppelin of ''Everything You Know'', there are more ideas here than most jazz piano trios manage in an entire career!
