The way bands come together are interesting. There is always some sort of odd tale to go along with it. I’ve spent 10 years covering bands from my fanzine to a website I use to record the music scene of Houston, TX. Always something interesting lurking in the bio to give some insight into a band you’ve never heard of or cared about before.

The tale of Econo goes like this…

In later 2005, Samuel Barker and his friend Waqar Jamil started jamming out some songs Samuel wrote after the demise of their old band, The Veils of Ignorance. The songs were more folk based and saw more open chords than blunt force barre chords. Jamil took up drums for the project, despite never playing before. The duo played some shows and recorded a demo.

Around Thanksgiving of 2006, Tom McMurray (formerly of the Putdowns and Kung Fu Grip) joined the fray on drums. Jamil moved back to bass, which he played in VOI. The band soldiered on with some new songs and after a few months of writing and reinventing the sound to be a bit more aggressive the band hit the road to play some shows.

After a few months, Jamil couldn’t keep up with school, work and the band, so he dropped out and the band added Jay Culver to the mix. Since then everything has been flowing very well and rather than give up on their recording sessions, the band moved on with Culver recording before ever playing a show with the lineup.

When recording concluded, Culver had to take a hiatus from the band for personal issues and he was replaced by McMurray''s old bandmate from the Put-Downs and Barker''s long-time friend Casey Callais.

Now, the band is awaiting the release date of their debut EP, The Recession on McMurray and Barker’s Smelly Menace Records (also home of fine Houston band 500 Megatons of Boogie).

Besides running the record label with McMurray, Barker runs https://www.tradebit.com, which chronicles most live shows that come through the city of Houston and the surrounding areas.
