Most of the time when you think about Valentine's Day, you think about children giving valentines to their classmates or people giving valentines and gifts to their lovers.
The origins of Valentine's Day are not 100 certain. Some experts believe that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman citizen who was martyred because he refused to give up his Christianity. He died on February 14 in 269 AD. The legend also says that he left a farewell note for his friend, the jailer's daughter. It is said that he signed it "from your Valentine."
In ancient Rome, 14 February was a holiday that was dedicated for the honoring of the Goddess Juno. She was the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. She was also the goddess of women in marriage.
The pastors of the early Christian church in Rome wanted to do away with the pagan element that was found in the feasts by substituting the Saints for some of these ancient celebrations. Thus, St. Valentine became associated with this particular festival.
There are numerous traditions that are associated with Valentine's Day.
In the middle ages, young men and women would draw names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would take these names and wear them on their sleeves for one week. This is where we get the expression about wearing one's heart on one's sleeve.
In some countries, a young man may present a gift of clothing to a young woman. If she keeps a gift, then it means that she will marry him.
One ancient tradition stated that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on the Valentine's Day, it meant that she was going to marry a sailor. If she saw sparrow flying, she would marry a poor man but she would be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, it meant that she would marry a rich man.
