The history of CircusGirls: An interview with Roger Lyons
When did CircusGirls begin, and how? Who met who?
ROG: I have known Louis Gordon since 1984. We have been doing music on and off since then.
I met Allan Owens in 1996 when he was frontman in a band called Geek and I was in a band called LionRock.
Al and Lou started CircusGirls together really
in early 1999 but as they worked in the next room to me, I got involved
virtually from the start.
Talk about the bands had each of you been in previously.
I have been in many bands the notable ones being LionRock and Olive.
Louis'' main live work of note is with electronic pioneer and hero, John
Foxx of Ultravox. Al was in Geek who were tipped for VERY big things after
signing to Columbia in 1997 but imploded before release of their fantastic
"3D Geek" album.
I dont know about Louis and Al but I get the best buzz of all from
Circusgirls.
What makes Circusgirls different?
Pain, guts and dogged determination. Oh, and our amazingly twisted take on
pop music.
You''ve done a lot of production work (Remixes, etc.). That''s
reflected in the arrangements and density of the band''s studio work. Is
that difficult to recreate onstage?
Yes is is quite tricky to get all the nuances from our recorded work but
we pull it off quite nicely. We have recently recruited a drummer, Bonney
who really turns up the heat on the live side. When he gets back from his
6 week USA tour drumming for The Australian Pink Floyd we will be having
our first writing sessions with a drummer. Scared? Very possibly.
Who writes the songs? Is it a democracy? Is one person in charge?
Yes, it is a democracy. Many of the early songs were started without me
and I may only have contributed at the end. Then when I was fully on board
in July 1999 we wrote together. Even now though we sometimes write in
pairs Lou and Al or Al and myself but we all throw into the pot.
How do the shows and recorded work differ, do you think? Do you see it
as a live band? A studio project? Both?
Oh, both, for sure. We have total control of the environment in the studio
and it does allow us endless artistic possibilities and, to be honest,
it''s three guys having a top laugh most of the time, but live is where we
let other people join in with our fun.
How are the band''s records and songs available?
You can buy an album at a gig but "Somewhere Off the Radar" and
"Where Have We Been All Your Lives?" are selling through CDBABY and
the iTunes store.
What do you remember about CircusGirls'' first gig?
It was at a club called Night and Day cafe on Oldham St, Manchester. It
was actually a gig by many bands all doing a Black Sabbath song and hosted
by Channelfly. We did a song called "Ironman" which was the only one we
knew the wrong chords to.
What have been the most memorable shows?
I guess our most memorable show was supporting New Order at the Manchester Apollo on 10 Oct 2001. It was the ONLY time I have seen the crowd rushing into the auditoreum to see what all the fuss was about.
It was fantastic even just to see New Orders guys dancing at the side of the stage.
What aspirations do you have for the band?
To make people happy through our music would be nice. It would be even
nicer if we could all earn a living from it. We want to do the festivals
of the world cause we maybe be the ultimate unheard festival band.
What are your plans for 2006?
A little success and recognition off the back of our two critically
ignored albums.
