Dakota Max (electric guitar, and vocals) and Cole Chitty (acoustic guitar, and vocals) formed the Juneau, Alaska quartet, Contra Public, in 2001. In 2002 Contra Public added drummer Alex Romero, and late that year they met bassist Bud Curtis, thus completing the line up known today as Contra Public. Contra Public began playing the local Juneau scene with bands like Peabody''s Monster, Dag Nabbit, and other Juneau emo, funk and hardcore bands, soon developing a local following. Nine months later, with a couple tracks already on the local radio station, the band toured interior Alaska during July of 2003. Contra Public played venues and festivals from Anchorage to Fairbanks and everywhere in-between, including very successful shows at Humpy''s in Anchorage, The Totem Inn in Healy, The Marlin in Fairbanks, and even Alice''s Champagne Palace in Homer.
Contra Public provides a strong, energetic live performance highlighted by the melodic vocal work of Dakota and Cole. Their original songs are powerfully backed by veteran rhythm players Bud and Alex, and the band''s music is diverse, evocative and emotive. Contra Public''s members pride themselves on their meticulous song crafting and strong live performances. The shows are tight and energetic, and Contra Public always leaves a crowd impressed.
The band has been playing shows relentlessly in Juneau and the surrounding SE Alaska area. Its members are always eager to play at a new venue for a new audience. Their first released track, Total Waste is still receiving consistent airplay on Juneau''s Rock Radio KSUP 106.3FM, Juneau''s Underground Station KBJZ 94.1LPFM, and even Anchorage''s Alternative Radio KZND 87.7FM. Total Waste has also been reviewed by God''s of Music, an independent online music reviewing web site (https://www.tradebit.com), which said that "...right to the last ringing chord, [Contra Public] produces an understated sound that is very appealing."
Having released numerous demos, Contra Public has now released their first, self-produced, full length album, False Feeling of Freedom. This first album brings to the studio Contra Public''s strong live stage energy while showcasing their developing songwriting skills and engaging rhythms, with such songs as Sterelite, Thankfully Yours, Screws Loose, and Valentines. KSUP in Juneau has already added FFOF''s first track River of Tombstone to their regular rotation.
