Details:
“There are few people who I listen to over and over and Cathy DeWitt is one. There is a quality about her voice that is so inviting and warm. The range of her voice is amazing.” –Tina Tourin, Director, International Harp Therapy Program

“Cathy DeWitt’s song ‘I Get Spring Fever in the Fall’ is a modern day standard. If you hear someone say ‘they don’t write songs like they used to’ you can correct them and say, ‘Oh yes they do!’ And then play them this gem of Cathy’s.” - Christine Lavin, singer/songwriter, XM Radio

Cathy DeWitt was destined to be a musician; it’s in her blood. Before she was born her father Bruce led his own band in New Orleans, often opening for Louis Armstrong at Pete Fountain’s place. At an early age she was picking out tunes by ear on the grand piano in the family living room. From her father’s Dixieland trumpet and stride piano to the Rachmaninoff and Chopin pieces her brother Peter, a prodigy pianist, played, music filled her house and helped create the eclectic performer she is today.

After strumming folksongs in coffeehouses, pounding the keys in a 12-piece rhythm & blues band, and singing jazz with great musicians throughout the U.S., London, and the Virgin Islands, she found an unexpected outlet for her talents in 1995. She became Musician in Residence for Shands Hospital’s renowned Arts in Medicine program at the University of Florida, where she now sings and plays for patients at the bedside, in addition to performing with her mainstream jazz band MoonDancer and five-piece female folk/bluegrass group Patchwork. (See and hear also at CD Baby!) Around that same time, Cathy started playing and singing for Unity churches and spiritual events, sharing the stage with New Thought mentors like Dr. Bernie Siegel, Marianne Williamson, Alan Cohen and others. All of this work is the inspiration for her latest album, “Dreamsong.”

As a jazz singer Cathy has been compared vocally with Anita O’Day and Diana Krall, and has won acclaim for her improvisational singing. Her song “Everybody’s Somebody’s Child,” featured on “Dreamsong”, won Honorable Mention in Unisong’s 2006 International Song Contest in both the Jazz and Overall Performance category, out of over 4,000 entrants. Her eclectic taste and versatile voice has been likened to Eva Cassidy and Prudence Johnson, Garrison Keillor’s regular Prairie Home Companion singer.

Even though she has recorded several CDs, “Dreamsong” is the first one that features only her own original music, songs with lyrics that were carefully chosen not for a similarity in style, but in theme. “These songs were all inspired by something greater than myself,” Cathy says. “They came in dreams, or from moments of great love, or from magical experiences of beauty and nature.”

Also a radio programmer, Cathy has intentionally created a very comfortable and connected flow from song to song, resulting in a musical journey of inspiration and joy for the listener.
