Derrick Lamar Kendrick, a native of Columbus, Ohio, holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. His musical career began in the seventh grade and expanded throughout high school and college. Over the course of eighteen years, Derrick has performed all over the U.S. in several marching/concert bands, jazz bands, percussion ensembles, steel bands, and choruses. He has also performed as a soloist in student recitals and at area churches in Columbus, Ohio and in the Miami Valley. Derrick currently ministers through music at the First Church of God in Columbus, Ohio, where Bishop Timothy J. Clarke serves as the Senior Pastor.
Mr. Kendrick has been active in the music arena for many years as a percussionist; but it wasn’t until the age of 22 that he discovered his love and talent for song writing. “Divine Appointment” was established, by Derrick, on Friday, June 13th, 2003. The group consists of many talents from the Columbus area. Their style combines highly syncopated rhythms with intricate harmonies and a laid back groove. The lyrical content is thought provoking and spiritually grounded and often inspired by Derrick’s own life experiences. The music always relays a positive message; consequently, “Divine Appointment” is not limited to one particular age group or listening audience. It is Derrick’s desire that all can enjoy his music or, at the least, have an appreciation for it. In July of 2007, the group released their debut album entitled “Only Through Him…”. Performing Derrick’s music, “Divine Appointment’s” mission is to minister to lost souls through song, ultimately drawing them to Jesus Christ. All that they do is to the glory of God.
