A bit of Knutz Crush N Run history -
*The starting line up*
The starting line up of Saggin Knutz was: Ray Prudhum (drums), Richard Rutherford (vocals), Terry Sennott (guitar/backing vocals), Steve Rosenberg (bass/backing vocals), and Mitch Rosenberg (guitar/backing vocals).
It started to come together back in 1992 when Ray and Mitch met through an audition for a local band, which never really panned out. Ray and Mitch kept in touch and became fast friends and eventually put together a trio ("Signal 34"), more or less to play R&B, blues, and rock (James Brown, Steely Dan, to SRV). That trio also had Doug Williams (bass) and Stu Brown (drums/percussion). They performed a few gigs in and around the Culpeper area. Doug had some other things going on and couldn''t keep playing.
*More of the original players coming into the picture*
As time passed Mitch had gotten a call from another local drummer, Tim Brown, who was trying to put a band together and invited him to come over and jam. This jam is where he met Terry. The jam was all it ever was going to be as there wasn''t enough commitment from Tim to make a real go of it. Terry and Mitch kept in touch.
*Back on the Signal 34 front*
Mean time, Ray was trying to revive Signal 34 with some other players from the area who he had played with in another band, "Drop Dead Cow." He had rounded up Lee Goldsborough (bass) and a friend of his, Mike Joseph (vocals). Mitch invited Terry to join them in this configuration. At that point everyone wanted a new name as to not be confused with the type of music that Signal 34 played in the past, since this new band was doing more up to date tunes by bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, STP, and others. They never really decided on a name, at one point someone mentioned "King Pin," but Mike had a problem with that since he was in the law enforcement field. After a few gigs, Mike and Lee both left the band - Mike due to lack of interest and Lee due to wanting to spend more time with his family, since it seemed that the band would possibly be playing more weekends than he was ready to devote.
*Once again - players without a band*
During this lull, Terry kept in touch with everyone and somehow had heard of Richard and wanted to give him a shot a being the front man. Mitch worked on his brother Steve to motivate him into playing the bass again (back in the mid 80s Steve and Mitch had another band together called "Phoenix" that played around the area). Steve was reluctant, but eventually gave in. After the first get together they all felt like this could be a great band. the songs that were played really came to life!
*What''s in a name?*
After a few rehearsals the guys were talking about what to call themselves. After a few names being thrown out and quickly shot down, Terry blurts out "why not call ourselves Saggin Knutz?" After kind of giggling about it they looked at one another and decided what the hell, at least it would stick in everyone''s mind...some would find it vulgar and others would just laugh. Knowing that some club owners would have problems they stuck with it any way. The clubs that let them play soon got over the name once they heard the musicianship that was there!
*First big show*
It really wasn''t a big show, it was a "battle of the bands." "The battle of the bands" was held at "The Pub" on the corner of East and Davis Streets in Culpeper. Once the women in the crowd heard they were going to do some Alanis Moresette they would get a little bent and say something like: "you can''t do Alanis!" Well they went out and not only pulled it off, but the women in the audience loved it! At that time they did covers from Led Zeppelin, AC/DC to Collective Soul!
*Falling Apart*
After playing some local gigs the guys decided to take a break around the holidays. This turned out to not such a good idea as it gave Richard some time to think they weren''t headed in the direction he wanted to go in, as he had written many of his own tunes and wanted to do his own three piece to show case them. So Saggin Knutz found themselves without a singer, after just starting to get a following.
*Next up*
After placing ads for singers in the local music shops, Steve received a call from a Rusty Kines who wanted to audition. Rusty came to the audition and was already familiar with most of the tunes they already knew. So things came about very quickly and they found themselves back out gigging around the area once again! Rusty became a fast favorite with the people who would come out to see them. His voice was well suited for the Collective Soul and STP stuff and can pull it off very convincingly. They continued to play the same clubs during 1999 - which surprisingly they played over 50 shows that year, which is no small feat for a group of guys with regular daytime jobs.
*Spinning out of control*
Bad news came about as Rusty decided that he wanted to join the service and do better by his family (can''t blame him for the family thing, but join the service?). So once again, they were singer less. Time passed, Terry kept in touch with everyone and had suggested getting Richard back into the fold. After not playing for a few months everyone was Jonesing, so they got together with Richard to see where his head was. They came to a mutual agreement to get things rolling once again with Richard in the front again. Things are rolling along now!
*Marching to a different beat*
After seeming to get things back on track. Ray gives notice of not being able to play as often due to his duties changing at his job. He recommended Dave Jenkins to fill in for him when he couldn''t make it. This didn''t really sit very well with the rest of the Knutz as they would have to work with two different drummers and work around Ray''s schedule. So they opted to use Dave to fill in for the rest of the booked gigs and they would audition other drummers to be the full time skin pounder. Dave was a great drummer to work with, just didn''t gel with the other guys.
*Look at what''s in the classifieds!*
After finishing all booked gigs with Dave on drums, things fizzled out again. Once again they were falling apart as Rusty had decided to call it quits too. Mitch noticed an advertisement in the local paper that stated "drummer looking for a band." After calling and having a good rapport with this person Mitch invites him to an audition. The audition came and turned out to be Shane Lambert, who turns out has a friend who can "sing his ass off!" They were very excited at the possibility of this panning out. The friend turned out to be John Paolicelli! After auditioning John things blossomed from there. They gelled from the start!
*Here we go again*
The first gig with the new guys, John and Shane, was an outdoor event that they try to pull off once a year in Madison. It was a huge success! The crowd really dug the sound they heard and the new tunes to boot! Back to the circuit of clubs again!
*Intermittent*
Through the months John and Terry had their run-ins, Shane had his with his wife. Things were up and down. Some weeks seemed like they couldn''t hit a bad note, others seemed like they should have quit before they started. Time passes and John''s desire to do originals grows. After talking about quiting they talk things out and decide that they need to work in the original direction. John is somewhat happier, that things are going his way. Meantime, Terry tries to get John to try one of his songs, but John is reluctant. After trying repeatedly Terry decides he''s had enough and decides to take a break from the band, so he quits.
*On the search again*
After auditioning some other local guitarist they luck out and find someone not quite so local from Spotsylvania, Christian Fletcher. During his audition, the guys get the feeling that things will gel quickly with Christian and see that he gets into the music when he''s playing. Once again they are a whole act again and chomping at the bit to meet the masses!
