Hello,
My name is Mark Knoll and I am pleased to announce the release of my first CD entitled “The Mark Knoll Band, High Time”.
This record is a high energy offering of musical interplay between some of the areas finest musicians, as well as good, old-fashioned song craft. I sincerely hope it lifts your spirits as it does mine.
The CD features ten of my original songs with me on guitar and vocals, Michael Pilhofer on drums, Charles Fletcher on bass guitar, and special guest appearances by Ricky Peterson (John Mayer, David Sanborn, Prince) on Hammond organ, and Scottie Miller on piano.
Watch for the December and January issues of VINTAGE GUITAR MAGAZINE for a review of the CD (Dec) and a feature article on the Mark Knoll Band (Jan). These issues should be available in October and November.
I moved to the Twin Cities in 1985 and within weeks was the guitarist in the legendary Doug Maynard Band. Steve Raitt soon offered me the gig as the guitarist for the TC Jammers fronted by Melanie Rosales on vocals, Bobby Vandell on drums, Doug Nelson on bass and Pat Macken on tenor saxophone. One of the highlights of my tenure with the band was a performance at Rupert’s Nightclub with Bonnie Raitt sitting in on guitar and vocals. Another memorable evening found us sharing the bill with Little Feat. This same dynamic rhythm section with me, Bobby, and Doug, also provided backing for the Lamont Cranston Band for several years, sharing the bill with Edgar Winter’s White Trash, The Hoopsnakes, and many others. Pat Macken and I also worked together in his band North Coast with Gordy Knudson (Steve Miller Band) on drums.
I’ve worked as a guitarist in many top Twin Cities bands, subbing in with the Legendary Combo, Mick Sterling and the Stud Brothers, and The R Factor to name a few. I have provided backing for many national acts on the State Fair and Casino circuit, including Chuck Berry, Little Richard, The Drifters, The Platters, The Coasters and the Marvelettes. My work has also been featured on some fine local recordings, including Scottie Miller & The Re-Uptake Inhibitors and George Faber..
I’ve had the pleasure of working with the areas finest musicians, playing a wide variety of styles, from funk to blues to jazz fusion. My new record “High Time” is the result of that rich and diverse experience, distilled into an original work reflecting my passion for all soulful music, with a focus on rock and blues.
BAND BIOS:
DRUMS: Michael Pilhofer
A prolific performer, clinician, and educator, Michael Pilhofer has an impressive list of credits to his name. Michael’s diverse performance background includes having worked with local groups such as the Legendary Combo, Mick Sterling and the Stud Brothers, Debbie Duncan, Bruce Henry, Connie Evingson, Patty Peterson, Cynthia Johnson, Gwen Matthews, Voice Trek, Cookie Coleman, and others. National artists Michael has performed with include Joe Lovano, Marian McPartland, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Bill Holman, Dr. Horace Boyer, Wycliffe Gordon, and Gene Bertoncini. As well as being an in demand clinician Michael is currently an Assistant Professor at McNally Smith College of music in St Paul, one of the premier contemporary music colleges in the U.S.
BASS: Charles Fletcher
Charles is an accomplished electric bassist, bringing his 4-string, 5-string, and 6-string fretted and fretless bass talents to a wide variety of performances. His credits include extensive blues work with Jimmy Valentine, Lamont Cranston, Doug Maynard, and many others. His performances in the Rhythm and Blues scene include work with Mick Sterling and the TC Jammers and reggae/calypso with the likes of Shangoya and Wain McFarlane. Charles has also performed with jazz groups Northcoast and Glen Helgeson’s Axis Mundi, to name a few.

HAMMOND ORGAN: Ricky Peterson
Ricky is best known for his now 20 year association with saxophone legend David Sanborn and for having produced written and played keyboards for Prince on and off since his early days on the Twin Cities scene. Playing on David Sanborn records since the mid 80’s, he performed with and produced Sanborn on “Songs from the Night Before” and Prince on “Gold”, Emancipation”, and “Crystal Ball”. PIANO: Scottie Miller
Having toured extensively here and overseas with Big John Dickerson and Blue Chamber in the late 90’s, Scottie returned to Minneapolis to form his own band, Scottie Miller and the Re-Uptake Inhibitors. Scottie is well known in the Twin Cities for his strong Minneapolis-New Orleans funk flavors, reflective soulful ballads, slow blues, and R&B cuts that wander back and forth somewhere between Ray Charles, John Hiatt, and Dr. John.
