Exploding Crustaceans There are good bands are there are bad bands. Somewhere between this chasm of musicianship lurk Santa Cruz''s Exploding Crustaceans. Originally formed as a two-piece novelty act as UC Santa Cruz in 1989, the Crusties have doubled their size, cashed in on this now punk phenomena, and yet somehow maintained their svelte band average of a 1" x 2" penis (we''re shrinking). They have also increased their fan base through a strict regiment of inbreeding. In terms of overall sounds - they sound like Glenn Danzig breastfeeding the Dead Milkmen. But that was all before the big Safeway Select Cola endorsement. Armed with an ample supply of Select Cola, physiques refined by the Thighmaster, and the sensitivity of Alan Alda, the Crustaceans are definitely an up and coming punk rock band with melodies that would even make Michael Bolton jealous. Hell, he wrote 1/2 of their songs, anyways.
Let''s meet the Exploding Crustaceans: Matt on vocals and guitar, Dave on lead guitar, Joe on bass, and Chris on drums. Most of their songs are about food, midgets, blood and girls. Most songs clock in at two minutes flat and show an adept penchant for hitting the ''E'' chord.
They currently have 2 EPs out, "Booger" and "Perfect" and one full length release, "Goatee of Blood". They released them all on their own because its the punk rock thing to do. Their pop gem, "Crabs" is featured on local fanzine Hectic Times'' compilation and "Anarchy Cheerleader" is part of a compilation put out by the Red Room. They are also on a surfing video entitled, Monster Mavericks, along with songs from Good Riddance & It among others. Soon out: a 20 song CD due to be released in August of ''96.
Several places have been introduced to the ways of the Crustacean. The Crusties have played a lot of Santa Cruz venues (Red Room, Live Soup, Skinny McDoogle''s, 7th Ave Vet''s Hall) and a few in Berkeley/San Francisco (Gillman St., Berkeley Square) and toured up to Vancouver and also went to Lollapalooza in ''92*. Being the wise-cracking, caffeine-crazy fellows they are, the Crustaceans are always into playing all ages/non-alcoholic shows. Some of the noteworthy bands they have played with are: Lagwagon, Fury 66, the Swingin'' Utters, Screw 32, Good Riddance. They are hoping to play more shows outside of the Bay Area.
