Details:
David DeGrand is a composer and performer whose training is from the Berklee College of Music in the 1970s. His first independent CD, Machine Music, includes collaborations from guitarists Scott Free and Lee Daniels, each also from the Berklee College. The album uses four synthesizers for almost all of the sounds, with programs for the synthesizers individually done for the compositions.
The compositions utilize jazz and modern popular rhythms, along with counterpoint and orchestration suggestive of modern classical music. Many of the sounds are only possible with synthesizers, but the natural elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint are always dominant over any "sound effects".
