ROCK: Classic Rock, ROCK: Progressive Rock
Derin Dow is a rock vocalist, guitarist/bassist and songwriter whose style is similar to the melodic AOR bands of the late 70s and 1980s. His vocals are sometimes compared to singers like Steve Walsh, Lou Gramm, or Tommy Shaw. Dow also excels on the guitar and bass, as is evident on his latest CD, "Retroactive".
This "retro" album reveals Derin''s many classic rock influences, delivering 13 original, "active" songs that combine catchy guitar riffs with soaring vocals and lush vocal harmonies. There''s no shortage of guitar solos here either. The tunes range from hi-energy rockers like "Friday" and "Right Side of the Road" to haunting ballads like "Door To Your Heart". Also included are some spiritual cuts like "Signature", "Runnin To Win", "River Of Time" and the 7-minute opus "Highways".
Special guest musicians on this album include former Doobie Brothers drummer Chet McCracken, ex-Chicago guitarist Chris Pinnick, and keyboardist Jim Lang (ex-Todd Rundgren/Joe Cocker). Also featured are guitarist Mark Keller, bassist Paulo Gustavo, and keyboardist Paul McDonald. Self-produced by Dow, "Retroactive" delivers a raw, ''live'' sound that is long on substance and short on studio gimmicks. Hear it for yourself! (Note: CD Baby song samples are played in MONO. Originally from Indiana, Dow has lived in Los Angeles since 1989. He is a former member of various L.A. bands, including The Unknown and the Waifs. Derin has also been featured in RECORDING magazine on two occasions, as author/engineer Jon Bare detailed his experiences in the studio recording drum tracks with Chet McCracken. (RECORDING issues: June 2002 and March 2003).
Based in Los Angeles, the Derin Dow Band has recently added some new members for live shows, and is currently performing in the Los Angeles area. The live band consists of Corey Dean on lead guitar, Bobby Leon on keyboards, Kim Nielsen-Parsons on bass, and Sam Aliano on drums. The band recently opened for ASIA on July 31, 2005 at the House of Blues (Sunset Strip).
Dow, who works as a school teacher by day, appears on his own independent label, Crapshoot Music.
