NenĂȘ’s Biography

Born Realcino Lima Filho in Porto Alegre Brazil, the boy who was called NenĂȘ began extracting his first sounds from a small plastic toy tambourine. NenĂȘ''s parents, who were lovers of music, encouraged him and he began to go to events with his father, always accompanied by his little tambourine. After a while his father decided that Nene’s tambourine wouldn’t take him anywhere as a musician, so he bought him an accordion and made him study.

At first NenĂȘ did not like the instrument, but became more interested upon hearing Breno Sauer and Cinnamon, on the radio. At fifteen he joined a regional musical group, which played at dances and on local television programs. When the band broke up, NenĂȘ already had his eye on the drums and began to study frantically. After two years of intense study, NenĂȘ left for SĂŁo Paulo where he accompanied a bassist and the pianist Cidinho, who now lives in New York.

With the dissolution of the trio and behind on his rent, NenĂȘ decided to accompany the guitarist Almir Stockler, on piano in local nightclubs. NenĂȘ had studied piano as an amateur, but had never performed. Between the diverse work in nightclubs, and knowing the pianist AloĂzio Bridges, with whom he studied, NenĂȘ became an accomplished jazz pianist.

AloĂzio Bridges is also the one who introduced NenĂȘ to Hermeto Pascoal. Hermeto had a band called O Quarteto Novo, which had Airto Moreira on drums. When Airto Moreira left for the United States, NenĂȘ jumped to fill the vacancy. Hermeto gave him Airto’s charts and a recording of the Quartet. NenĂȘ went to his room and spent the night learning the songs until an hour before the audition the following day. With all the songs mastered, NenĂȘ was immediately accepted, becoming a member of the historic quartet.

NenĂȘ moved to Rio, where Hermeto lived and they began to rehearse eight hours a day. With Hermeto, NenĂȘ recorded two classic records, ZabumbĂȘ-bum-ĂĄ and Hermeto Pascoal Live at Montreux. In this period he also toured with Hermeto through Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Two years later NenĂȘ was invited to join Egberto Gismonti’s band Academia de Dancas. In the same year He traveled to Europe to record Egberto’s album Sanfona, on the ECM label. NenĂȘ played on the tour to promote the record, playing in 45 countries. The last show of the tour was in Paris where NenĂȘ settled and lived for the next twelve years.

In Paris NenĂȘ recorded his first album Bugre, which was chosen by the respected French magazine Jazz Hot as one of the ten best records of 1983. This opened doors and commanded the respect of the French, leading NenĂȘ to play with the most respected musicians in France. In Paris NenĂȘ wrote a complete book of Brazilian rhythms for drummers, published by Zurfluh. In Europe he participated in diverse projects that included an invitation to compose, arrange and conduct for the Denmark National Orchestra of Jazz culminating with a live broadcast on the radio, playing with the Swiss guitarist Vinz Vonlathan. During his visits to Brazil, he played, arranged and composed for the group Pau Brazil, with whom he composed and performed The Opera of 500 Years, in commemoration of the discovery of America.

NenĂȘ has gone around the world, with various exceptional groups, in his own multinational formations, aside Hermeto on the piano and Arismar do EspĂrito Santo on the double bass, with Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, and a quartet formed by NenĂȘ, Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden and the famous French guitarist Michel Portal. Having recorded six records as a composer and bandleader, NenĂȘ has also played on over 17 other records as a sideman over the years. And now NenĂȘ has set his sights on the United States with his first U.S. release and 7th release as a leader OgĂĄ.

OgĂĄ is brimming with the vibrant spirit NenĂȘ has brought to the world and music all his life. A passionate and contemporary blend of Jazz and traditional Brazilian rhythm, OgĂĄ is a glimpse into the vision mastery and musical legacy that has brought NenĂȘ from Porto Alegre to the world. As NenĂȘ says in his own words, “OgĂŁ is the name given to the percussionists that play in CandomblĂ© ceremonies (Afro-Brazilian Religion). I thought that name had a lot to do with me, because my aim is to be an OgĂŁ of the Universal Music.”
