Details:
Penny Relentless is an independent, female-fronted, Los Angeles based indie alt-rock band. They are lead by singer/songwriter/guitarist Abby Kincaid, whose childhood ambition was to become a female version of the legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page. “I started writing songs when I was 9, but I didn’t have any great ambition to sing the songs I wrote…until I heard PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me album.”
Shortly after finishing M.A. coursework in English at Indiana University, Abby moved to Los Angeles to give music a serious shot. She began playing guitar, recording and touring with a variety of acts including mellow alt-indie rockers Arrica Rose and the ...''s, power pop punk bands Atomic Bitch, Boink, and The Bitter Things, Grungy Punk band Lola, Warped Tour Riotgrrl staples Shiragrrl, singer songwriter Gayle Day and R&B singer Angie Smith. Her playing has been heard on college radio stations across the country and in the feature film "Who''s Your Daddy."
While lending her talents to a variety of acts Abby was writing and re-writing material for what would become Penny Relentless – the band. “I’ve learned something from every artist I’ve ever played with. But none of them satisfied my own creative and artistic lust. I have always aspired to make music that contributes an authentically tough but still feminine voice, to the rock genre, a voice that maintains a sense of humor without becoming too esoteric but without being reduced to novelty or cliché. My female rock heroes are people like Tina Turner, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Patti Smith, and of course PJ Harvey. I want my music to do the influence of my predecessors justice without becoming too derivative. I’ve been recording and writing with this goal in mind for 10 years and with The Trial of Penny Relentless: volume ii, I feel like I’m finally on the right track.”
In addition to leading Penny Relentless, Abby is writer of a very rock ‘n’ roll thesis titled Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves: Writing the Rock Chick Myth that she is in the process of publishing.
