Details:
The New Violin Family Association is proud to present our newest CD, "Playing for the World." This disc is a compilation of selections from the recitals and performances given at OCTET 2005, our first annual international convention held in Ithaca, New York in October 2005. The tracks feature almost every one of the eight-member new violin family octet in some historic performances, including a special arrangement of Vaughna Williams'' "Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis" for 23 parts--the most octet instruments ever gathered in performance up until now. Professionally recorded and mastered, this CD is sure to have something you like. It comes with an eight-page printed pamphlet filled with information about the performance, the players and the pieces. And if you''d like to know more, click on the link below and browse our web site!

The new violin family consists of eight acoustically matched instruments from a small treble violin (called a piccolo violin in Europe and Asia), tuned an octave above the standard violin, through a contrabass nearly seven feet tall. Because of the consistent acoustical theories used during their construction, all eight instruments are technically violins. The New Violin Family Association is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to promote the integration of the violin octet and the individual instruments of the set into the musical mainstream. Your purchase of this album will help us to continue our work.

The octet instruments were designed by Dr. Carleen Maley Hutchins, who also developed the theories of acoustical tunings used on the free plates of the instrument while it is being built. These techniques can be used on conventional violins, violas, cellos, and contrabasses as well. The Violin Octet answered the request of composer Henry Brant for a consort of instruments, one at each half-octave, that would span the entire range of written music. For her lifelong work in violin acoustics, Hutchins was awarded the Silver Medal and made a Honorary Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, its two highest honors, and she has been awarded four honorary doctorates.
