I never knew I had it in me from the start. There were plenty of reminders along the way. Blowing on my father''s tenor sax when I was only as tall as the sax itself. He left it out leaning against the downstairs sofa and I walked up to it and started blowing on it. Taking piano lessons and playing by ear half of the time. Playing solos in school and college bands on my father''s tenor saxophone. Maybe it was my father playing his jazz records when I was a toddler. He played Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet(my father and I saw him live in New York City), Flip Phillips, Ray Charles and others. Soon enough I bought my first tenor sax, a Selmer Mark VI. I''ve been playing it ever since.
I learned to play jazz chords on the piano and improvise on the sax as a teenager and have played in many groups since then...
