I was born in Augusta, GA., moved to Brooklyn NY, where I started singing with my father at a very early age. He played the guitar and I sang. I actually hated singing at that time, not knowing singing would be my calling.
As I grew older, I sang Blues, Folk, Country, Pop, Jazz, R&B and Gospel. I truly believe I was always called to sing gospel. God was calling me, but like many others I didn''t listen and went on with my life.
I played with many R&B artists such as Edwin Starr, Eddie Floyd, Ben E. King, Denise La''Salle, Solomon Burke and opened shows for Brooklyn Bridge, The Barkays, James Brown, Comedian Wildman Steve, PigMeat Market and Leon (The Burner) Austin. I hosted the local Gong Shows, where I was M.C. and was given opportunities to sing with most of the top groups. I shared the stage with Archie Bell and the Drells, The Chilites, Roger Trotman and ZAP, The Voltage Brothers and SHARLIMAR, with Howard Hewett. I also sang for the first Miss Black Augusta Pageant.
I traveled on the road with the group, Sly Slick & The Wicked, of Cincinnati, Ohio. Since I was the youngest at age 18 and fresh out of high school, the group took me under their wings and taught me the ropes.
Even though I was living a life that many youth aspire to live, as I reflected back, I think of how empty and unfulfilled my life truly was without GOD. “Thank GOD! He never gave up on me. He called and called. I kept thinking, What could He want with me, after all I had done and seen.
When I recognized the void in my life, I stopped singing, performing, and playing trumpet. But there was always a song in my heart waiting to come out, like a baby being born. My deliverance started when I was in the movie "The Boy King" with Irene Cara and Howard Rollins as an extra in the church choir. After the movie I started looking for a Church Home. I then realized that God calls some to preach The Word, others to sing The Word. That epiphany started my transformation. Now I live, sleep, eat and breathe to sing PRAISES to the Lord.
Since then I have recorded my first Gospel CD and sang background vocals for Pastor Jimmy Hicks. I am in Pastor Hicks video “Born Blessed”, which is nominated for a Stellar Award and Best Video. I''m also in the new video "MOVE" from the new album "THE JIMMY HICKS PROJECT", featuring Diana Hicks Hay. Produced by Marlon Stokes, who also produced my CD, "FRED PERRIN * Project Faith".
I now know that ministering through song has given me new spiritual meaning and has saved my life.
I am married to a wonderful and supportive wife, Fatima, the proud father of two sons, a daughter and six grandchildren.
