I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “Record a CD.” Record a CD? “But Lord,” I thought, “I haven’t even written any songs yet!” Not only that, the journey the Lord had been taking me on was…well…not at all what I had expected. Let me take you back to the beginning.
My experience with music began with the piano in elementary school. In Junior High, I played the drums in the orchestra and the marching band. I loved music; it was a part of my life. Enough so that after I finished college, I took a songwriting class at UCLA and was very close to completing a few secular songs. Then, something happened that completely changed my life. The Lord through his grace saved me. I became a Christian September 16, 1995.
Then came another surprise; God told me to stop working on music. So I did. For the next 7 years I focused on studying the Bible and developing a relationship with the Lord. One of the things I remember so clearly during this time was how much I loved times of worship. The Lord even moved us to Applegate Christian fellowship where they had morning worship 5 days a week, Friday and Sunday night worship in addition to the normal Sunday and Wednesday services. I attended them all!
In 2003, the Lord directed me to return to music and to learn to play the guitar.
Later that year, I was in a prayer meeting when a man prayed “Lord please provide someone to lead the worship for our men’s group.” I sat silently, but I could hear the Lord say to me, “Jim, you are going to lead this worship.” Just like Jonah, I said, “Lord there is no way I can do this. I only know a few chords and a few children’s songs, that’s it!” On and on I went. Over the next few days, I kept arguing with the Lord. Then I finally said, “Okay, Lord. If you want me to this, then they will have to ask me directly.” Since I had no real qualifications for this, I knew that they would never ask me. Unbelievably, four weeks later, they did ask me. So I started to lead the worship for the men’s group – I knew about 10 songs and none of them very well.
In June of 2004, I was reading a book called “The Road to Reality” written by KP Yohannan. Some words in the book really jumped out at me: “God is searching for the man or woman who will wait and ask questions like, What do You want me to do? Where do You want me to do it? How do You want me to do it?” I closed the book and asked the Lord these very questions. That’s when I heard it:
“Record a CD”
This is certainly not what I was expecting. I was expecting something like: “go on a mission trip” or “start a home bible study.” How was I going to record a CD when I had not even written a single song? Once again, I knew the Lord would have to show me the way, as I had not even the smallest notion of how I could do this.
I did write the first song a few months later. At first, I “wrote” all my songs by singing the words and melody into a tape player. The only problem was I didn’t know how to get my songs on tape translated into guitar chords. One night in August of the same year, the Lord said “take out your guitar and I will give you the chords for your song.” I argued that I had tried this before, but sat down with my guitar as He had asked. The song was done in 10 minutes!
I am so thankful God is patient and continues to speak to me. In November 2004, I was at church wondering how I would ever make a CD and the Lord told me that I would be making the CD with the guy sitting next to me. I pointed out to the Lord that I wasn’t aware this guy had any musical abilities. I soon found out that Mike Sierras -- the guy sitting next to me -- not only played the guitar, but played keyboards, drums, bass, and his passion was recording and producing music. Once again the Lord miraculously provided and Mike and I began to work together.
This CD truly is a miracle of God’s faithfulness, grace and mercy to me, a person who does not deserve any of it. I am so thankful He is patient and had mercy on me for all the many mistakes I made before and after becoming a Christian. If you know Jesus, thank Him greatly today for His mercy to you. If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, pray this simple prayer. “Lord I do not yet believe in You, please reveal Yourself to me”. I promise you He will reveal Himself to you in His timing. He is real.
