Details:
“Mark Fry’s outstanding musicianship, recording inventiveness and ability to interlink many influences should be highly regarded.”
Audiversity, 2007

When 19-year-old Mark Fry recorded his debut album DREAMING WITH ALICE for RCA in Italy in 1972 he little imagined that it would resurface three decades later as a sought-after cult recording, favourably compared to Donovan and the Incredible String Band, frequently bootlegged and described by The Unbroken Circle as a “defining masterpiece” of psychedelic folk. The long-awaited Sunbeam Records reissue in 2006 confirmed its status as an underground classic, and prompted Mark to return to the studio to record SHOOTING THE MOON, his first album in 35 years.

Disillusioned with the constraints of the music industry, in the intervening years Mark had become a successful painter, with several solo exhibitions of his work in leading London galleries. But what most art lovers (and most fans of ALICE) didn’t realise was that Mark had never stopped writing songs and playing what he describes as “bedroom gigs”. “For me, painting and music have always walked hand in hand”, he says. “They ebb and flow; one influences the other”.

January 2008 will see the release of Mark’s second album SHOOTING THE MOON on his own label Boredidlebaby. The new album includes 15 songs recorded in France – where Mark built a studio in a corner of an idyllic Norman barn and painstakingly found the sound he wanted – and in London, where a small group of musicians contributed other parts including fiddle, saxophone and pedal steel. The “lithe, spindrift guitar work” admired by the Wire on ALICE is in evidence again, this time with an unprocessed sound that perfectly reflects the simple poetry of the songs.

• Legendary, enigmatic singer / songwriter
• Praised in Mojo, the Wire, Record Collector, Dusted…
• First new album in 35 years
