The debut album from singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Oliver Lemke, recorded in the spare bedroom of his apartment at St. John’s College, Santa Fe, New Mexico. All ten songs were written and committed to tape during a smoky and bitter-cold fall semester in the southwestern mountains, and edited and mixed throughout the following year. Dead for the First Time is in many ways about the stirring high-desert wastes where it was recorded, but it also concerns the more universal themes of infatuation, family difficulty, and death, as well as the enduring mystery of Ms. Eva Braun’s “thing” for the man whose facial hair became an icon of insanity.
The songs have been described as “moody,” “intelligent,” and “clever.” They are by turns dissonant and achingly melodic, and do not always sound as if they were not recorded in a bedroom with one guitar, one bass and a Casio keyboard. The album as a whole has been described as “organic,” just like many carrots. Some have described the artist himself as “morose,” but he feels that you only need to take a good look around you in order to become as gloomy as he is.
