Details:
This is the first album ever recorded by a soloist on the treble violin, an instrument with a body length of less than eleven inches that is tuned an octave above the standard violin. Russian violin virtuoso Grigori Sedukh and his accompanist, Inga Dzektser, recorded this album during a whirlwind tour of the Rocky Mountain region in June, 1998. A versatile performer, Sedukh also plays two selections on the larger soprano violin and one on the mezzo violin. This disc includes two bonus tracks of traditional Christmas carols arranged and adapted for these new violins by noted composer and arranger Robert J. Miller.

Grigori Sedukh is a violinist in the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Quartet and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He is professor of string studies at the renown St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music and treble violin soloist with the St. Petersburg Violin Octet.

Inga Dzektser is a graduate and post-graduate of the Leningrad State Conservatoire and has been a featured soloist with many orchestras throughout the former Soviet Union. Madame Dzektser is professor of chamber music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music.

The studio performances contained on this CD were recorded during a tour in 1998 to pay tribute to Dr. Carleen Maley Hutchins, the driving force behind the creation of the Violin Octet. The tour coincided with the release of the St. Petersburg Octet Album "The New Violin Family," also available through CD Baby.

The treble violin is the highest member of the Violin Octet and has a sound often described as "angelic." Due to its small size and short string length it requires a masterful player, but in skilled hands it can soar ten steps above the highest note on the piano! The larger soprano violin is tuned a fourth above the standard violin and has a sound that is surprisingly rich for its size. The mezzo violin is tuned the same as a conventional violin, but its greater size gives it a more robust sound with a real mezzo quality.
