Va Va China is a contemporary free improvisation ensemble that de-emphasizes free jazz by encouraging coherent musical motifs and incorporates new musical styles such as drum n'' bass and ambient music.
They began in New York in 2005 from drummer JTR3''s desire for a non-pop music outlet. After playing with such groups as from Polyvinyl Records'' Volcano, I''m Still Excited!!, Ready Fire Aim, The Winter Pageant, Good Evening, Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble, and touring with Sufjan Stevens as well as many others he felt that improvisation would provide an ample outlet for his other miscellaneous ideas.
The members of Va Va China include old friend and frequent collaborator, David Cloyd, bass guitar, who fronted the band Good Evening and has a new solo project called Humans Chase Us. Oberlin genius Dan Mintz fronted the electronica group Fighter Pilot which maintains its rotation in college radio. The horn players include Patrick Wolff, tenor sax, and Matthew Brown, trumpet, both of Asiko. Patrick also fronts a jazz trio bearing his name and performs with the brilliant Kayo Dot. On alto sax, Rich Miller, comes from a jazz and composition background and fronts a group under his name.
This record, "Archipelago," is made up of two discs, each containing a different live performance from 2006. Recorded on mini disc and video camera mics respectively, the lo-fi recordings capture exemplary performances that would otherwise remain without documentation. They also emphasize the group as a live ensemble with the audience as a participant and not merely as a consumer. In this case crowd chatter appears in the background and often sounds like a pre-recorded audio track. The serendipitous moments of these two shows are too numerous to account for in this little space, but more importantly the group is happy that they can share the performances with others.
