The Shadow out of Time is the first independent release from the Wellington band ‘Vibrant Tongues’ featuring Blair Latham, Tom Callwood & Reuben Bradley.
The album was recorded in late 2006 at STL audio in Wellington NZ.
After initially meeting at the Jazz School in the late 90’s, Blair, Tom and Reuben played together in many different ensembles, until they decided to collaborate on an album of original compositions.
The end result was an album of intense subtleties, shifting feels and textures, collective improvisation and urban dialogues. Drawing stylistic influence from jazz pioneers such as Ornette Coleman, Andrew Hill, Anthony Braxton and the modern NY jazz sound of artists such as Chris Speed, Jim Black and Henry Threadgill.
Vibrant Tongues most recent performance was a sold out show in the Wellington International Jazz Festival (2007) with NZ Bass legend Paul Dyne (on 2nd Double Bass) recorded by Radio New Zealand for Concert FM.
Vibrant Tongues exist as a collective, working as trio, a double-double bass quartet, a septet and an octet, working as a co-operative with other NZ jazz musicians such as Lucien Johnson, Anton Wutts, Nick van Dyke, Joe Callwood and Nils Olsen.
