Crystal Kid was born from the collective songwriting skills of brothers Frank and Charles Torrealba. They began cultivating their intriguing pop sound in 2003, with the ambition to create songs with meaningful lyrics and memorable rhythms. “We always listened to what every other artist had to offer and we asked ourselves, how can we make ourselves be heard in this musical jungle?” says Charles. Crystal Kid’s roots are in Calgary, Alberta, but the Torrealba brothers are strongly influenced by their experiences growing up in Brazil and traveling the Americas.
With Frank on vocals and bass, and Charles on guitars and keyboards, the songs of Crystal Kid are lyrically focused with strong pop melodies. Inspired by artists like Oasis, Michael Jackson, Radiohead and U2, Frank and Charles have high standards for writing music and continually revise and rework their songs until they are perfect. “Coming up with a hook is just the beginning of a painstaking process”, Frank adds.
Crystal Kid successfully completed a F.A.C.T.O.R funded 3-song demo with Engineer Josh Gwilliam (George Canyon, Ghost of a Modern Man) in 2006 at Juno Award Winning Recording Facility MCC Studio. The band also participated in the VIBE 98.5 $100,000 Star Search where they received encouraging feedback from the audience as well as the station’s radio personalities.
Crystal Kid’s self-titled new EP features six new songs (Come Dance, Sorry, Don''t Slow Me Down, In A Little While, Drive and The Distance Between Us). The record is partially funded by FACTOR, The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings. The album was produced by Daron Schofield and the band and engineered by Josh Rob Gwilliam at Juno award-winning recording facility MCC Studios in Calgary.
Crystal Kid plans to tour in May of 2008, with the first shows taking place in British Columbia.
