Rooted in the tradition of Jazz improvisation, The "NEW URBAN GROOVE" makes use of many different types of music to express the multitude of emotions that may be experienced in the day to day living of an urban/city environment.
The group was formed in mid 2003 by composer and Trumpeter Doug Ellington.
Over the years, Doug has performed with many different local and international musicians. Grand- Nephew to eminent Composer, Band Leader, and Musician Duke Ellington, Doug finds true passion as the primary composer and arranger for the group. The New Urban Groove was organized not only as an outlet for the expressive musicians who comprise it. but also to provide an alternative for listeners who love the spontaneity of improvised music, while still holding value to a rhythmic pulse that will get the toes tapping and the rump shaking. The band mixes Catchy Melodic phrases, while still exploring a great deal of harmonic freedom.
The other Talents brought to the group employ a myriad of complementary experiences. Featuring Composer and Saxophonist Chazz Alley, Drummer Steve Kaku, Bassist Dave Smith, and Pianist Yuma Sung. While the bands Primary focus is using personally developed devices to make a connection with its fellow urbanite, they will still often time throw in an old standard or two to pay homage to the True Greats of the Music.
