Interview with Elam several days before the official release of his second Ambient album, DRIFT...
Q: What is Drift all about?
Elam: Drift is a set of four ambient pieces which are meant to be heard together, and in order. In some ways, you could say that Drift is a continuation of the techniques and sound-awareness I gained while developing and recording ''Meditations'', however in many other ways, ''Drift'' represents an entirely new approach at Ambient music & music in general. I never really use the same formats or formulas twice, everything I do is constantly evolving and growing. Even though both albums belong to the ambient genre, they are each quite different. Drift is my newest work and represents my latest findings.
Q: Elam, do you intend for Drift to be heard in a certain environment?
Elam: Well, as with most of my ambient compositions, I usually hope they will be heard in a gentle sort of way. This certainly isn''t dance music, so I probably wouldn''t eexpect to hear this kind of music filling the floors at a club... More for intimate settings, quiet times, background entertainment, or an aural palette cleanser for when someone has heard too much of something! For headphones, maybe? But I probably wouldn''t classify Drift as being a definite "headphone music" type album. I think I will do an ambient headphone-music album in the future, but Drift probably sounds best on speakers.
Q: Anything else to say about Drift?
Elam: I conceived and recorded "Drift" during a period in my life where I was just fully opening my eyes to the possibilities of chromatic behavior. "Drift" is a set of four harmonic soundscapes. The first two tracks, "Invitation to Drift" (#1) and "Transition to Drift" (#2) aptly lead to "Drift" (#3). After that, in the fourth and final track, "Slight Return After Drift", the listener experiences a changed and perhaps heightened experience of harmonic progressions and the relationships between sounds.
