Details:
On both, the poetry and hip-hop scene, Bobby Rocwell is Chicago’s forerunner for consciousness and social change. Bobby Rocwell is regarded as one of the city’s most promising hip-hop artists. Born Robert Gayton, on the west side of Chicago, he is a man with a message, Hip-hop doesn’t have a soul anymore, and it has lost its true meaning and culture. I am here to bring those things back.”
Bobby’s latest album, “The Institute of Bobby Rocwell” was released in January of 2008. It is a lyrical journey into the life and times of a man seeking redemption. Raised on the north and west sides of Chicago, Bobby grew up listening to a wide variety of music. Inspired by many legendary artists, (Al Green, Donny Hathaway, The Beatles, The Police, and Stevie Wonder) Bobby would develop a deep appreciation for music at an early age. Bobby believes his open mindedness towards all genres of music molded him into the artist that he is today.
“I didn’t write this album trying to change the world. I wrote it in hopes that, through my honesty someone will have an awakening of their own.”
Encouraged by his six grade teacher, Bobby began writing poetry at the age of eleven. As the 90’s rolled in, some of the greatest hip-hop artist were born. Favoring the story telling style of artists Nas, Jay-Z, 2 Pac, Biggie, and Big L, Bobby would pen some of his first rhymes. However, the late 90’s would prove to be a challenging time for Bobby. Growing up as the only son to a mother of three and an absent father, Bobby would look to the streets for validation of his manhood. At the age of seventeen Bobby Rocwell was convicted of several drug related offences and sentenced to four years in prison. “Jail is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.”
Oddly enough it was in jail where Bobby would have what he calls, an awakening. “I realized one day that 99.9% of the people in jail looked like me. They were all young black males.” That was the day that his thinking changed. Once released, Bobby began on a path to put his life on the right track. Never straying from his love of music, Bobby once again started to write. Writing was different after jail, Bobby no longer glorified drug dealing and the street life. He had seen first hand how it had destroyed his community. Transitioning from the street life would prove to be a challenge in itself. Bobby struggled to break the addiction of fast money and the street mentality. “What people don’t understand is that it’s an addiction. I craved fast money. I was just as addicted to selling the drugs as the user was to buying them.”
As he watched friends and family members fall victim to drugs and violence, Bobby began to look for more positive things to do with his life. In the years that followed, Bobby would go on to work with many different youth organizations throughout Chicago. Sharing his experiences with young teens hoping they would make better decisions than he had.
Currently Bobby Rocwell is an accomplished photographer (mousetrap https://www.tradebit.com) and event promoter (attire https://www.tradebit.com) in the city of Chicago. He hosts a spoken word poetry night weekly at the Checkerboard Lounge in Hyde Park. Bobby Rocwell’s photography can be seen on countless local fliers, posters, artist bios, and album covers.
