MP3 Dave Lear - Sweet Science
An utterly unpredictable album; ten eerie folk songs about the fight game that exist somewhere at the unforeseen juncture of "Astral Weeks," Norman Mailer and the Buena Vista Social Club.
Details:
Dave Lear has lived two lives - as a longtime musician/songwriter and the former lead singer of the popular NYC alt-country band, The Humbuckers, and also as a noted sportswriter and boxing aficianado who has worked for ESPN, NBC Olympics and The Sporting News (where he is known to readers as “Large”). With “Sweet Science”, his recent release on No Mas Records, Dave has combined his two lifelong passions – boxing and music – in an utterly unpredictable album, ten eerie folk songs about the fight game that exist somewhere at the unforeseen juncture of "Astral Weeks," Norman Mailer and the Buena Vista Social Club. It’s as much a collection of short stories as it is a record, narratives set to spare, acoustic arrangements and told in Lear’s rich but fragile cadences. Bobby Chacon, Ruben Olivares, Teofilo Stevenson, Louis v. Marciano, Tito v. Oscar - all of these legends and more find their place on "Sweet Science", where boxing fans will hear their sport evoked with all the drama and grandeur of its glorious heyday, and music fans will hear a folk album as gorgeous and provocative as any released in recent years.
