Based on the terzetto Pria chio limpegno of Joseph Wiegls light opera LAmor Marinaro, Woelfls theme and nine variations were composed to meet the insatiable public demand for popular works. A direct contemporary of Beethoven with whom he was often compared, Woelfl received his early education from Leopold Mozart and Michael Haydn and was regarded as one of the leading piano virtuosi of his generation.
