Gottschalk: Jerusalem Grande Fantaisie Triomphale, Opus 13

In his Fantaisie Op. 13 titled Jerusalem Gottschalk treated several themes from Verdis eponymous opera, which was immensely popular at the time. The technically demanding concert piece stands in line with the plethora of works that were performed in a similar style in the first half of the 19 century. It tells a story about the art of extemporization at the peak of its development, the art of virtuoso improvisation on any popular melody, which Gottschalk and his contemporaries Liszt and Thalberg mastered to perfection. Not only does the piece represent an attractive technical challenge, it also invites a reevaluation of the existing scheme of values regarding that admirable art, and is bound to enrich any romantically oriented concert performance.
