In his Fantaisie Op. 13 titled Jerusalem Gottschalk treated several themes from Verdis eponymous opera, which was immensely popular at the time. The technically demanding concert piece stands in line with the plethora of works that were performed in a similar style in the first half of the 19 century. It tells a story about the art of extemporization at the peak of its development, the art of virtuoso improvisation on any popular melody, which Gottschalk and his contemporaries Liszt and Thalberg mastered to perfection.
