Details:
Garrett L Perkins is a native Californian born December 13, 1974 in Sacramento, California. He began high school already performing in the band and orchestra with his two favorite instruments the string bass and his beloved alto saxophone.
He connected with Berklee School of Music during his freshman year at Sacramento High School and continued to study with Berklee through high school and into higher education at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Sacramentans all remember when the sound of Garrett Perkins entered their consciousness. For some, that introduction came while listening to his rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star showing that brilliance yet to come. For others the brilliance came through their observance of his writing, composing and improvisation with jazz greats.
At the age of fifteen, Garrett opened for Freddy Hubert and Mercer Ellington, son of the legendary Duke, who complimented Garrett by saying “ Garrett, you’re the real thing”. Ike Paggett, longtime music teacher/administrator, reminds us that “Garrett is a music prodigy. Every now and then, you get musicians who innately have the ability we call “Pitch Memory, Garrett has it! He can hear things coming before anyone else can. ”Reggie Graham, jazz pianist says “The surprising thing about Garrett is how quickly he matured as a musician. I met him at age thirteen and 3-4 years later he had moved way off the chart. By the time he was twenty-one he was a resident pro. ”The Sacramento Bee’s music critic, William Gluckin wrote, Garrett’s debut at the Sacramento Community Center Theatre, “In the jazz category, Garrett L Perkins, playing Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” at a very slow tempo in a robust tone, provoked shouts when he began to improvise in the bridge of the song, eventually finishing with a long, high note that brought people to their feet.”
“Music means happiness to me” is the theme for Garrett as he completes and markets his first CD. A young man who began as a music purist believing only a few artists like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane were worthy of his time. He now says “Creativity should never be limited… there is no wrong in music”. Garrett has had a Quartet since the age of fifteen as an avenue for playing his beloved alto saxophone. In this his first completely original musical adventure, playing his heart out he asks all of us “Can You Hear Me”?
