The gentle swirl of energy above the mighty cascades brought 5 wandering souls to one place. And then it began, LEADFACE was born in early 2000. After years of roaming the 5 souls combined to complete the mission brought forth by the love of groove and the desire to break the cycle of stale music in our society today.
LeadFace is a five-piece band in Portland, Oregon comprised of Greg Powers (guitar), Mike Williams (sax), Steve Miller (bass guitar), Shane "Frenchy" Barbeau (drums) and Patrick Staley (lead vocalist).
Greg and Steve met in their late teens on the east coast and began playing together in various bands within the hard-core Baltimore scene. They moved to Colorado in the mid 1990s and formed UXB, a post-grunge three-piece band, of which Mike was a fan. Mike and Greg moved to the Pacific Northwest, followed by Steve, and the three started the band Headcase.
Meanwhile, Frenchy moved to Portland from Wichita, Kansas, where he met Portland native Patrick, and the two became roommates. After an eviction, Pat went to Eugene and Frenchy stayed. He and Greg were co-workers, soon friends, and Frenchy became a Headcase fan. Headcase didnt work out, however Greg, Steve and Mike still wanted to be in a band together. Over lunch one day, Greg told Frenchy they needed a drummer to form a new band. Frenchy thought he would give it a try, and got a drum kit from his dad. They gave it one month, then decided the needed a vocalist. Frenchy suggested his friend, Patrick. He asked him to come hear the new band, without mention of any singing. After a bit, they invited Pat to take the microphone. He was a natural, belting out the first lines of "Here We Go Again" just as they are now, in what has become their signature track Something Vicious, and LeadFace was born.
After months of practicing, their first show was at Portlands legendary La Luna, along with 36 Crazy Fists and Shuvel, a band from LA who were friends of Frenchy''s. In 2002 LeadFace recorded a demo at Ironwood Studios in Seattle. They played numerous shows in the Northwest, including back-to-back shows with Sleepytime Gorilla Museum in Seattle and Portland. This led to a West Coast tour in 2003, which hit Tucson, The Roxy in L.A., Portland and Seattle with Chango Malo, Dredge and Shuvel.
In 2004 they began writing material for a full-length album, and exposing themselves to the "outskirts", smaller towns. In September 2004 they began recording Life, Poverty and the Pursuit of Heaviness at an undisclosed location hidden among the trees at a family friends studio on the North face of Mt. Hood. In the summer of 2007, as flowers danced in the breeze, there came a sound. From the smokey confines of the basement.
