In his Overture for large orchestra dedicated to his friend Cherubini Chevalier Sigismund von Neukomm paid his respects to his colleague, patron and companion during his first stay in Paris. They both shared a deep admiration for Neukomms master Joseph Haydn, and a love for German music, in particular spiritual music. The present work was composed during Neukomms stay in Rio de Janeiro, and may for that reason be seen as a remarkable example of non-European music of the classical period. With this contribution Neukomm played a significant role as cultural ambassador in the NewWorld.
