Details:
Mary Ann Munro was born into a musical family in Austin, MN. Many of her early memories involve music: singing around the piano with her grandmother and mother, singing to entertain her family, and watching music videos on MTV.

“I remember watching Cyndi Lauper’s video Time
After Time while my parents were going through their divorce. I remember sitting in my grandfather’s chair and wanting to cry because here somebody on MTV was singing about something nobody could really explain to me. It made me feel less alone. It was at that moment that I knew that I wanted to do what she was doing. I wanted to sing and make people feel better by doing so.”

During middle and high school, Mary Ann took piano, violin and classical voice lessons. Towards the end of high school, Mary Ann had the opportunity to study with the renowned Twin Cities voice teacher Oksana Bryn. While studying with Oksana, Mary Ann’s love affair with singing was reawakened and she considered a career as a classical singer. After high school, she was accepted to the prestigious vocal performance program at the University of Minnesota. She was assigned to one of the most respected voice teachers in the program, but she felt artistically restricted and disconnected from the repertoire she was required to study and was irritated that she was instructed to only listen to classical music. During this time, Mary Ann also experienced her first great love and, subsequently, heartbreak.

“After two years and a hint at a future marriage
proposal, he broke my heart for the last time. I was
crushed and I vowed I would write songs and never let
another man get in the way of my desire to sing.”

Mary Ann’s debut album, The Flame is a stirring collection of songs exploring love, lust and loss. Two of her songs have already appeared in the feature film Arnold’s Park and on the soundtrack.
Ms. Munro’s voice is rich, silky and complex. It is the voice of a woman who has lived life and has something to say. Her music throbs with pain and longing at one moment and is teasing and bubbly the next. Blood, sweat and tears have gone into the production of this album and the result is well worth it.

“This album is a collection of songs detailing my experiences and all the little pitfalls that I encountered on the road to finding love. I hope you will enjoy it.”
