Details:
For "Levitation," I assembled the same group of musicians from the "In Tongues" CD, and went into Seaside Lounge recording studio in Brooklyn, NY, on October 12, 2007.

We had a short window of opportunity with which to pull this session together, nonetheless, the same spirit that drew this group together to begin with again guided us through a set of sparse rehearsals and into the studio for a fantastically creative session.

It culminated in seven new pieces, which are shorter and somewhat different from the "In Tongues" session. I took more chances on this record, pushing the group into new directions and achieving new sounds, textures and compositions. Prior to the session, I sent each member of the group notes and musical sketches, and then we held two rehearsals before the record date. There are preconceived pieces as well as several freely created pieces on "Levitation."

In my process, I am careful not over rehearse, as improvisation is the driving impetus behind this endeavor, and I feel it is important that the element of chance and raw creativity be present when this group plays.

In contrast to the "In Tongues" session, this record date at Seaside Lounge had the group in a smaller space, with a new engineer, Mitch Rackin, who assisted us in recording the group in a more controlled environment. On "In Tongues," we recorded live to digital with no isolation between instruments, while on this session each instrument was sonically isolated and we used headphones to establish independent live mixes. Each piece is a live take. We recorded to two-inch tape. The result is a warm and powerful sound, which I credit to Rackin''s ideas and engineering.

On "In Tongues" I used 11-gauge roundwound DR guitar strings on my Gibson ES-333 guitar, played through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amplifier.

On "Levitation" I switch to 12-gauge flatwound Thomastik strings on my Gibson ES-333 guitar, and played through a Fender Vibrochamp amplifier.

I also used a Boss ME-5 looper on one piece, and experimented at times with a distorted guitar tone and tremolo from the Fender amp. Diego brought in new sounds as well, with clarinet and bass clarinet on some pieces as well as flute and alto sax. It''s a quirky set of pieces, ranging from power and abandon to light-hearted and melancholy.
I hope you enjoy it.
