Details:
Love Ballads is a collection of original love songs composed by John Allen Watts and inspired by the classic sounds of Pop and R&B, with a few added twists thrown in. The album features the vocal talents of Lisa Yves and Laura Berman, both of whom lend their strong musical personalities to the album. Ms. Yves’s powerful interpretations are featured on the songs “Never going back,” “Perfect on paper,” and “Nobody loves you,” while Ms. Berman’s husky and soulful approach is heard to great effect on “7th Generation,” “Been a long time,” and “Light within me.” The composer, Mr. Watts, appears as vocalist on “Rollerblading,” “Completely,” and “That’s’ so much.” While quite melodic, this self-produced album is also harmonically and structurally quite interesting. For example, the song “Completely,” a Latin and Middle-Eastern influenced number, includes an extended, orchestrated outro. “Rollerblading” includes verses of varying proportions and features a great ‘double’ sax solo by Aaron Heick who plays both parts. Mr. Watts describes “7th Generation” inspired by a Native American proverb, as a love song to the environment. “Never going back” features an extended intro, an innovative approach to what is otherwise a tightly-structured Pop/R&B-influenced tune. Altogether this album, with its great variety, displays great passion and is eminently listenable.
