Some bruises come after a short, sharp blow. Others creep up on you, the result of continuous pressure, applied so slowly that you never even feel the pain-you only see the mark on the skin and wonder what happened.
On its third album, "More Strange Bruises," Ether Net inflicts bruises both ways: sometimes with impact, sometimes by building atmospheres that creep up on you.
It''s an approach the group has perfected since vocalist-guitarist Robert Cherry and bassist David Mooser first began collaborating in 1993. In 2001, drummer Brent Gemmill joined the band, and Ken Leonard, Ether Net''s longtime strings and keys arranger, took a more central role in the proceedings.
Together, they form an unyielding musical coalition that spans as much musical space as its members span geography. Cherry and keyboardist Leonard are the Americans in the band, both born in New York state, and currently residing in Cleveland and New Orleans, respectively; Mooser is Swiss; and Gemmill is a New Zealander.
Ether Net''s sound not only reflects the member''s far-away influences, it also brings them to heel. The result is a disc of dueling extremes.
Over the course of eight songs, produced by Don Depew (Guided By Voices, Cobra Verde, New Bomb Turks), "More Strange Bruises" plays a tug of love and war between pop hooks and random noise; between lilting guitars and incessant rhythms; between "real" feelings and the feeling that you have none.
On straight-ahead blows such as "Disco Crush," "Skyscraper Soul" and "The Exit Song," the quartet aims right for the head and body. Guitars kerrang; rhythms bash relentlessly; and words fall over one another like dominos:
"You''ll never lose your best friend. She takes up all your time and plays it back again. Compress, distort, delay-affects your actions. It won''t feel real until it fills your ears with glue." ("The Exit Song")
But Ether Net also knows that bruises aren''t always so straightforward. Sometimes they occur in unexpected ways, like the impressions left by "Medical Waste," "Wildebeest" and "Ghosts."
"Ghosts" appears with drums pounding in circular motion and a distant but oncoming synth line. It''s a lover''s lament that, while wounded, lunges forward. Cherry''s vocals are weary, but not resigned to fate:
"Now you''re waking again. With more strange bruises. How''d you live long enough to get here? There''s no good or bad. It''s just you at your weakest, drowning the strength that you had. Please believe me. There''s another way. Let me love you. We''re both better than this."
Ether Net has arrived with an album that is less interested in the answer than the bruise itself. Not only how did it get there, but all the ways the mark takes shape.
