History in the Making for Beau St. Pierre
Amidst the murky swamplands of the infamous Louisiana landscape, lies a city famous for a myriad of wondrous culture and musical genius. New Orleans has been the home of legendary jazz and blues in conjunction with great musicians. Both venues and musicians that have simmered in the southern culture’s eccentricities to produce an infusion of influential elements. I had the pleasure of meeting one such amazingly talented musician who embodied southern charm and was as easy going and charismatic as the Big Easy itself. Louisiana native, Beau St. Pierre graciously met with me to talk about his life, loves and upcoming album.
I was lucky enough to catch his show in Baton Rouge one night and experienced his talent first hand. I had seen him perform before with his friend and colleage, Jake Smith, but I hadn’t seen him in his own right, with his own music. It was worth the wait.
Beau’s boyish good looks, hospitable nature and obvious interest in fitness were disarmingly familiar as we talked about his latest project with Nashville Producer Dan Strain. I felt like I was talking to an old friend as he gave me the insight behind where he had come from as a songwriter and how he had become a “Jack of all Trades” instrumentally. I asked him how it had all began and when he had learned to play the keys, trumpet and guitar.
“I started playing the horn and keyboard as a kid. My dad has this horn under the bed, which I would pull out and play while he was at work. My mom had a keyboard, that was also under the bed. I would sit with a radio trying to play the songs that came on. My mom wanted to put me in piano lessons, but I cried every time she brought it up. I just wanted to play around on the piano, not actually play it. As far as singing, I was the worst in my family. Everyone told me to stick to the instruments under the bed.” Beau modestly confessed.
I found it hard to believe that someone with such soothing vocals and innate ability to harmonize instinctively was ever discouraged otherwise. But opposition always brings drive and passion forward. And like many that persevere, Beau’s talent came through in his latest project, vocals and all.
“There are so many things out there that inspire me. Bill Withers to U2 to Beethoven (really.) The guys I play with now really inspire me, even more than those when I was in college. They are all from New Orleans and have no schooling on their instruments yet have so much limitless talent.” Beau said of close friends and alumni.
Refreshingly humble and yet confident of his purpose Beau reflected on his surroundings growing up and his own personal inspiration.
“When I leave town to go play somewhere and people ask where I am from, I tell them New Orleans. It’s almost like they expect more and look at me differently. All those things run through my head when I play.”
Beau’s youth was steeped in a city of musical greatness and his passion for the instruments he plays is evident. But it was a devastating event that catapulted him into the direction of writing his first songs and putting together his first album.
“Yeah, the story is that I was robbed in 2006. They took everything including four trumpets, cables for my keyboard and microphones. At that point I was considering grad school for classical performance on trumpet. Well, when this happened I had nothing to play, nor the money to replace it and get back on track. I had a cheap guitar under my bed, (go figure!), that I picked up and just sang my woes away. I wrote three songs that day that pretty much summed up my life. “When I am down,” “Wish,” and “Angel.” These songs were about not letting life get you down, what I wished I could be and then “Angel” was about my fiancé.”
Beau’s album is everything Beau is. It’s strong, soothing and inspirational. The album entitled “History,” is more than just a collage of Beau’s personal experiences. It includes a definite outlook on the future while acknowledging the past, and the importance of events that led him to where he is and who he has become. The record contains bluesy tracks and pop vocals that aren’t contained by one genre alone.
For a young boy growing up in New Orleans that found his calling from instruments under his parents bed, he has now evolved to grace the stages of impressive venues and tour with well known acts. His album,”History,” (available in 2008), speaks more highly of Beau’s future and all the talent he will bring it.
