Details:
"Like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds or Jerry and the Pacemakers, Natalie Cortez and the Ultra Violets are a band, except their lead singer happens to be, well, Natalie Cortez. Cortez''s voice bears more than a passing resemblance to Natalie Merchant''s -- perhaps the name Natalie makes ladies sing like that. The Ultra Violets'' music, though, is straight-up, pleasant, alterna-pop along the lines of the Pretenders." (AI)

"On their second release, Twitch!, Cortez and Co. transcend the folk-rock label by coming up with a batch of tunes that have loads more passion than your usual folkie purging the soul, and are prettier too. Cortez brings to mind Natalie Merchant, but while 10,000 Maniacs churned out album after album of bland material, the Ultra Violets provide a buoyant backdrop for Cortez''s vocals. Melissa Olsen''s rambunctious organ parts, Dave Theno''s bass lines, and Steve Randall''s guitar jangle on ''Ghost of You'' make for a very danceable tune. ''Up All Night'' details the intoxicating mix of too much caffeine and obsession with a coffeehouse singer; on it a mock sensitive Cortez sings, ''Dare I say it in such simple terms/ Oh yeah, I think I love him.'' Of course, Natalie, guys like the direct approach." Howard Myint, San Francisco Bay Guardian, October 2, 1996
