Details:
Every city has a sound and Indianapolis, Indiana is without exception. In the past three and half years, the city has evolved in to somewhat of a local pit stop for industry executives in need of a fresh fix on their way to Chicago or Nashville. Independent continues to define this new Indianapolis sound and iconic pop rockers Extra Blue Kind remain the fiercest of gatekeepers to the city, the scene, the sound.

The band grew out of a jam-band laden, frat-boy funhouse circuit on the campus of Indiana University in early 2000. Lead guitarist David Barajas was in a popular rock band in Bloomington at the time when he spotted P., Randee the drummer and then bassist Squirt doing their thing on a normal Friday night. For P., Barajas, and the guys, music has always been their full-time aspiration since childhood and their chemistry was instinctual. Still in Bloomington in 2002, EBK actually struggled to find an audience amidst the prevailing jam bands and an underground vinyl- loving contingent who abhorred their popular sound.

It was not until EBK submitted a modest demo that year to local radio station X103''s Battle of the Bands contest and won that the band grew an audience and became local celebrities. Part of their prize included studio time to develop a single with the Johnson twins (The Pop Machine).

The King of Everything, the bands'' first studio single, spun on the local airwaves for most of the summer of 2002. Stadium shows followed in which EBK shared the stage with bands such as Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, the Trust Company, Stone Temple Pilots, Kid Rock, Creed and Everclear. Outwardly, the band seemed to have it all; relentless A&R calls, a management contract to consider with a well-known Los Angeles firm and a visibility unparalleled for guys so early on in their careers. Inwardly, the band began to question themselves and what they really wanted long-term.

That''s when EBK decided not to make any decisions and define their selves musically. The guys moved to Indianapolis in 2003 and spent a year writing and developing their style. They continued to play live regionally and even booked a tour of the Southwest. EBK was determined to build an authentic, built-to-last fan base. They also spent time in the studio again later that year, only to can the entire record.

Dissatisfied with their sound and down to three by the spring of 2004, in many ways the band was tempted to doubt their choices. It was those very circumstances however, that provided the impetus for EBK to write most of their debut full-length, the Tide and the Undertow. Bloomington bassist Brian Peterson (Snakedrive) stepped in and so did regional start-up Opulent Records at that point.

Not hip enough for the hipsters? Perhaps a bit too intense for a Friday night frat house and a little left of just right for radio, EBK continues to develop themselves in to sonic para-foxes. Determined to maintain their own independent standard while maintaining an equally fierce accessibility that identifies some of rock''s most popular acts today; Handy and Barajas'' songwriting sits in it''s infancy, ready to be received in to the world.

The Tide and the Undertow, as a collection of songs features a mixed bag of influences touching on early Cure a la The Head on the Door, the Pixies, the multi-faceted Dave Grohl and the lo-fi art rock of the Sea and the Cake. It is produced by Vess Ruhtenberg (the Zero Boys, United States 3, the Pieces) and mastered by Ian Schreier. The Tide and the Undertow is available online and in FYE and Coconuts stores throughout the country. For more information please visit https://www.tradebit.com or https://www.tradebit.com.
