Session One

Die-hard fans of Freestyle have known about this project for some time and were on the verge of giving up hope that it would ever be completed.

This album took two years to complete and more preparation than I had anticipated. Along the way I found that I had to re-learn certain aspects of production. But the real challenge was trying to create music that was somehow anchored in the past yet also had hope for a future.

This project, in many ways, is an evolution for me. There are a few tracks here that are definite departures from my past work and others that are finalized versions of earlier visions.

“Veronica”, written by Tomax, has been kicking around in different demo forms since 1991. It was difficult arriving at the final version, but I felt that it was important to finish it because of how different the subject matter is compared to the average dance song. Inspired by the thought provoking and introspective songwriting of groups like The Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode, Tomax’s lyric seems to represent an era in dance music that is long lost.

“Don’t Ever Say”, written by Lisette Melendez is also an experiment. Inspired by the acoustic guitar on an obscure Beatles record titled “Things We Said Today”; this marks my first attempt at recording a Freestyle record with live guitar and bass.

There are several experiments on these two CD’s. Including the first ever edit battle. I have the privilege to have been part of an inner circle that includes my ex-partner Omar Santana, the late Chep Nuñez and The Latin Rascals, who invented the concept of multiple editing. Although this art form has all but disappeared, it does live on in cyberspace.

I came across the “Editheadz” Yahoo group several years ago and have been in contact with several of its members from around the world. I invited some of them to “battle it out” on my project. I thought it was important for these editors, who have almost secretly kept the art alive for the last ten years, to have a stage from which they could express themselves.

Freestyle has supporters around the world, France, Germany, Brazil, etc. There are fans out there that know the history of this music inside out, and it was the e-mails and the notes from these individuals that inspired me to do this one more time.

I tried hard to find myself in this music and in the process I hope that I’ve created a little something for everyone. I’m aware that I’ve taken a risk with some of the work here, but this is the only way I’ve ever known how to do it. I hope you approve.
