Connoisseurs of contemporary jazz music and rhythm & blues will find few luminaries in the field who play the music with the fervor and felling of Dorsey Summerfield & the Polyphonics, for over 40 years, a Shreveport, Louisiana based Sextet of professional musicians style has pleased audiences from the greasy spoon chitling circuit to ritzy concert theaters. The group has a full repertoire of contemporary jazz and rhythm & blues renditions that easily stamp them as one of the most entertaining instrumental/vocal groups in performing circles.

Led by saxophonist Summerfield, the group has been making music for a very long time and according to music aficionados the band seemingly gets better with each passing performance. A well polished and practiced organization, the group''s sound, in recent times, has been enhanced by the addition of Jan Givens, Ava Burton, and Elise Lattier beauteous females vocalist who is certain to etch out a place for them among female vocal practioners.

Having performed on the bill with such great artists as Jimmy Smith, Tom Browne,Henry Johnson, LaVerne Butler, Joe McBride, Phyllis Diller, Bobby Bland, Percy Sledge, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Platters, the Coasters, the Drifters, Kim Waters, Jimmy Witherspoon, the professional pyrotechnic are in easy evidence.

Members of the group are Dorsey Summerfield, Jr., who plays soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophone, percussions, keyboard and vocals, Leroy Hawthorne, keyboards, guitars, and vocals, Melvin Landry, bass and vocals, Terence Fisher, drums, and vocals. Amazingly, all the men are college music majors with degrees, practiced, and performed in the style of the great jazz musicians of this and prior eras.

Summerfield, whose style is greatly reminiscent of the late great Grover Washington, Jr., Najee, Boney James, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Tom Scott, is a former lead Alto Saxophonist for the Genius Ray Charles Orchestra, having replace the great and capable Hank Crawford in the band. Summerfield, who doubles as a university professor where is heads the Music and Art Department, band leader, is on peer with the great musicians of this era. In addition, he is adept at arranging, orchestrating, composing and a serious student who is devoted to jazz music. His sidemen posses equal musical acumen and their togetherness, teamwork, and professionalism make them one of the best aggregations in the profession.

This veteran group has considered several recording opportunities, but has remained unrecorded commercially because of their professional feeling collectively of not yielding to commercializing their music, except by their own designs.

The group has played thousands of engagements and almost always gain to favor with their audiences. The group has thrilled audiences at the famed Venetian Room of the Fairmont in Dallas, TX, the Blue Room of the Fairmont in New Orleans, LA, the Mystic Seashore Resort in Connecticut, the historic Stand Theater in Shreveport, LA, and many more just to name a few.

Summerfield has composed 15 original compostions, including one recorded by jazz trumpeter Tom Browne for MalacoJazz titled " Happy Song " . Some of these compositions will be offered in their up coming CD recording to be release in late 2001.

The group can be often found performing at the Isle of Capri Casino & Hotel, the Horseshoe Casino & Hotel, Harrah''s Casino & Hotel, and soon the Hollywood Casino & Hotel all of the Shreveport/Bossier City Louisiana area.
