Who is Fake Tourist?
Fake Tourist is a duo, Marc and Kordula Coleman. They met because of a mutual love for music. Marc was a guitarist/vocalist/songwriter in the United States, and Kordula was playing guitar and writing songs in Germany. They were both on the same e-mailing list, for fans of the Verve, the now-gone and sorely missed psychedelic band. Friendship and then more took place over e-mail and the web, an ocean apart. The long distance relationship was hard, but songs grew out of it, and you can hear the longing and the love implicit in these tunes.
Kordula joined Serotonia, the band Marc was in, and eventually moved to their home base of St. Paul, Minnesota. They played many shows and made 2 EPs while she was in the band. They also formed what was then known as Marc and Kordula, with both on guitar and vocals. They married, and Kordula''s involvement with Serotonia ended after she became pregnant with their first child, Audrey. During this time they renamed the duo to Fake Tourist and honed the songs they had already written and wrote new songs.
Fake Tourist has been playing out in the Twin Cities area recently, and more shows are on the way. At this time, they are working with pre-recorded backing tracks, comprised of beats and also bass lines. At some point they plan to play with special guests such as bass players and percussionists live, but the effect will always be down to the interaction between the two principles, the intertwining of guitars and voices.
Now Fake Tourist has released Taste, a self-released debut 4-song EP, which was recorded at home on their computer, where distortion can dwell with a small child. The newest song on the EP, Spirit Transfer, is a psychedelic epic of sorts, with Kordula doing a one-take flute improv over Marc''s layered guitars, and was written and recorded as an experiment, and serves as a complement to their more "normal" songs. This song, and recent live shows, are pointing towards a blending of their earlier more traditional song writing style with a new wilder direction.
