The story behind the title track “Something Wonderful” in Rachelle’s words:
There are two kinds of songs I write. The first kind are the ones I know I didn''t write. The second kinds are the ones that I''ve had to work on quite a bit. And the third kind is a mixture of 1 and 2. Something Wonderful is a song that I really didn''t write. I was at a Christian songwriting seminar in the summer of 2003. I was listening to one of the speakers tell the story of years ago when her husband died. She had 3 or 4 little children and her husband was in the military--away on assignment. She recalled a knock on the door. When she went to answer it, two military officers greeted her and told her the news that her husband had been killed. She spoke of telling her children and really struggling for a while. One particularly difficult day, the clouds lifted just a bit. She distinctly remembered the feeling come over her "If God would allow this to happen to me and my family, he must have something wonderful in store for us". I was just a member of the audience---but I received the song in her words that day. I got my notebook out and scribbled "something wonderful" as a song idea. Those two words lingered in my head for a couple weeks because I knew it was a song--I just didn''t know which song it would be. One night, I was rocking my baby Morgen to sleep in her bedroom. I was humming to her when all the sudden I began to sing the first line with its melody---"something wonderful is waiting to embrace you--I know". I put my baby in her crib and ran downstairs to my piano. I know when I get melody and lyrics like that, I''d better get to the piano. I wrote the basic song within about 20 minutes that night. I loved what I had, but the song wasn''t finished until some months later. I was a youth leader for my church and was asked to go on a trek across Wyoming in honor of the pioneers. I was the "Ma" and I had the privilege of walking along side many amazing teenagers---who sacrificed a lot to take part in an activity that was extremely difficult. One specific day, the kids had walked for at least 9 or 10 miles. It had been hot and windy all day and the kids needed rest because the next day they would walk the longest and most difficult part of the trail. Unfortunately, the wind would not let up. There were numerous prayers by the leaders--asking that the weather be calmed so we would be able to make it out the next day. It was not to be. In fact the wind got worse and most of us did not sleep that night. Tents were flying and people''s belongings were scattered everywhere. But the remarkable thing was that in the morning, all was well. We all seemed well rested and proceeded to push handcarts over hills for 13 miles that day. A couple weeks later, I was asked to sing at a fireside for all the youth who participated and their families. As I thought of our kids walking that pioneer trail, it caused me to reflect on the true pioneers who settled so much of our country. I thought of the windy night we experienced in modern times and wondered what it was like for our ancestors crossing the plains so many years ago. That pioneer experience was what I needed to complete the rest of the lyrics to this song.
