Like some crazed Merrie Melodies house band, Tin Cup Serenade will win you over with their croony effervescent swing, and hold you in their spell for an entire performance. February brings their first CD release just in time for Valentine’s Day; yet every day seems like Valentine’s Day in Tin Cup Serenade land. Like the gin rickey couples you’ll find swaying inside their velvety sound, the music has a light fizz and sparkle; the more you partake, the greater the thirst. Yet the deep blues that provides the kick, is played sweet as a maraschino cherry...
The love child of Billie Holiday and Hank Williams, crooner/strummer Rolf Wilkinson captains his ship through a romantic fog, bass institution Safa Shokrai’s thumps like waves against the hull, and Adam Goodhue’s brushes have the dark whisper of a rusty diesel engine. The melancholy muted tone of Larry Leight’s trombone sounds like a foghorn, sometimes wailing like a passing ship in the night. Pete Cornell and Lech Wierzynski’s horns round out the crew, who create a timeless and vibrant stew on the galley woodstove.
A fresh voice featuring veterans of the SF jazz scene, Tin Cup Serenade draws deeply on sources as diverse as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dixieland, and Western Swing, but with a sound that is very much here and now.
