There''s a musical movement quietly growing north of Atlanta in which the City Council is a driving force. Some local Canton boys raised around traditional blues, boogie and old time country have strayed out to discover the noisier sounds of modern rock, alternative, and even jazz. Each individual is driven by his diverse influences followed his muse and honed his musical craft. Together they formed the City Council and are now making music that breathes new life into a sound older than rock and roll itself. At times they present Sticky Fingers, while other times they''re a little bit on the Dark Side of the Moon.
Jess Hopkins and Scott Puckett played little league together. Serendipity brought them together again at an open mic years later, and they began playing acoustically together for a weekly stand at a local joint. After a short time, inspired by a famous Band recording, Jess realized the full potential of what the duo had started. He decided to bring in the highest quality bass and drumming he knew: Drew Lawson and Preston Corn respectively. Corn invited keyboardist B.J. Richardson along for the ride, and the five musicians from Canton are now the City Council.
The newly formed group was soon the house band at a local bar and the buzz was instant and a loyal, local fan base was hatched. The fledgling band started off playing covers of the Allman Brothers, Ryan Adams, John Prine and the Beatles to sold-out crowds weekly. The raucous crowds and wild nights also drew negative attention from the local city council, which put enough pressure on the owner of the bar to scare him out of the music business for while, thereby ending the band''s first standing gig. Undeterred, however, the band began playing various clubs in the metro-Atlanta area and, with a humorous irony, even adopted the name of the civic organization that momentarily put them out of work: the City Council.
The City Council started writing original songs and plugged them into their live repertoire. The band’s songs range from humorous ballads to feel good alt-country stomps to fresh, straight ahead rock and roll. The City Council is never afraid to reach out and blur the boundaries of various musical traditions. An overwhelming fan reaction inspired the City Council to delve deeper into the nascent material developing in rehearsals and live shows. The original songs were eventually culled together and recorded to produce their self-titled debut CD. Now they''re knocking crowds off their feet and winning new fans across the board. The City Council is a working band with a good-time attitude.
