Dallas Perkins hit the fast lane with “Unbecoming”

It was good luck that I didn’t get a big speeding ticket the first week or so I had a preview copy of Dallas Perkins’ upcoming EP “Unbecoming” in my sedan’s CD changer. Veteran axeman Dallas and the boys probably don’t realize it, but they’ve laid down some of the best driving music I’ve heard in years. There is no way to keep this CD under ¾ volume and the speedometer much under 70 mph. It just keeps nudging to the floor as you journey through all four tracks.
“Unbecoming” gets your attention immediately with “Taken Alive”. This straight ahead rocker hooks you with its two quick verses and then dissident refrain, displaying Dallas’s vocal range. Dallas then more than reminds you he is a premier guitarist with a 10- second face-melter. He means business with the guitar, even though these are perhaps his catchiest compositions ever. This quick and tidy opening ends with a more progressive display of Dallas’s mature fret board acumen.
“Get it Right” cleans things up with sweet PRS tones in the rhythm and Dallas’s melodic, soulful vocals and thought-provoking lyrics. The solo overlays are thick and stand up to the powerful vocals, solid bass and drum work. This is the anthem of the too short EP. I want more.
Powerfully titled, “Kurukshetra” is DP’s most technical guitar work on the disc, but the vocals are comfortably familiar, evoking Geoff Tate of Queensryche. It’s is dark in tone but somehow optimistic thanks to the emotional vocal ending.
“Indivisible” is where Dallas has you in trouble with the law. The sparse, floor tom- dominated verses explode into a 90 mph refrain that is becoming Dallas’s trademark, harkening back to “Eden Girl” on his 2000 offering “Emergent Behavior”. Dallas’s slick use of dynamics and “pedal to the floor” refrains will burn into your brain’s hard drive. Think of your favorite Hollywood chase scene, and this tune could have been the soundtrack.
The “Unbecoming” preview EP is now a fixture in my car’s CD changer. It’s always there and ready to push the speakers and my speedometer to the limit, whenever the traffic clears and the open road is in front me.
